Volume I, Issue 1
July 2010
Help us build awareness of EVA by forwarding the EVA eNews to your Enfield family, friends and neighbors!

Dear EVA Supporters,

It has been another busy month for EVA. Late in June, we held the Shaker 7 Road Race, our current signature fundrasier, and I spent several days working on closing it out. The logistical details are too numerous to mention so I will not bore you, but I do want to recognize and thank all of our sponsors, contributors, volunteers and runners. Check out the side bar Thank You Ad which appeared in the Valley News and the Volunteer Section at the bottom of this eNewseltter to see how many people it takes to put an event like the Shaker 7 on. Without these people, the race would not happen.

As promised in last month's eNews, there is an article on the Crystal Lake Green Up this past May. There was an amazing number of volunteers involved who deserve special thanks from everyone who enjoys the Crystal Lake area. It makes me proud to see what people do to keep the community at its best.

In August I will be focused on a major reorganization of my office, celebrating my first year at EVA, gearing up for another fundraising project, and working on our annual meeting to be held sometime in September or October. Watch our next edition for the exact date!

As the summer comes to a close and fall begins, I want to remind everyone how important it is to shop local, so please continue to "keep the good things happening" by supporting our local businesses during these tough economic times. When you think about driving out of town to shop, look at your shopping list and see what you can purchase in town to help our local businesses. I know they will appreciate seeing you walk through their doors giving them your support.

Sincerely,

Closing out Green Up Day
At Crystal Lake
by Shirley Green

On Saturday, May 22nd, 35 people from the Crystal Lake neighborhood came out to clean the roadsides in their watershed. We began at the Boys Camp on Boys Camp Road (generously donated by the Moeschen Family for this event) where we enjoyed about an hour greeting old friends and meeting new people, turning this into the first social event of the season for many of the Crystal Lake residents. People brought homemade doughnuts and pastries to share along with coffee and tea. (When it is cold, the Moeschens have a fire in the big old stone fireplace for everyone to gather around.) After the "social hour," everyone cheerfully and enthusiastically dispersed to their designated area to begin the clean up.

Every year people of all ages join in the fun. Some of them have been participating since they were children growing up on the lake and now have children of their own that are nearly grown. And don't forget the grandparents; they are stilling coming too. There is always a mix of young and old, long-time residents and newcomers.

The Wallace Family

A family event for Jack, Dianne, Mitch and Sid Wallace

This year we were able to increase the area that was cleaned. We cleaned all of Algonquin Road and Crystal Lake Road, Shaker Hill Road from Crystal Lake Road to Lockehaven Road, Lockehaven Road from Shaker Hill Road to Spectacle Pond, and all of Boys Camp Road. After collecting and bagging the trash and recyclables, we had folks pick it up along the road and then it was taken to the transfer station where other volunteers sorted the recyclables into the proper recepticals.

This year's volunteers were:

Boys Camp Road: Paul and Betty Harrington, Cathy Langley, David Pierce, Larry and Eileen Elgin, Diane, Kyle and Jaclyn King, Carol Cusick, and Don and Lynn Langley.

Carol Cusick

Carol Cusick, a long-time EVA volunteer with her trusty mule

Crystal Lake Road: George and Anita Tuoti, Joe and Mary Stagliano, Wayne Adams and Carol Stone.

Lockehaven Road (from Shaker Hill Road to Spectacle Pond): Sue and Ray Stanford, Sharon Prescetta, Henry Cross, Linda Cross, Pete Hugo, Russ Clift, Albert Langley, Glyn and Shirley Green and Tracey Doolittle.

Life-time residents of Crystal Lake, Don and Albert Langley joined several other members of the Langley family to participate in this annual event.

Algonquin Road: Howie and Joan Clark.

Sorting at the Transfer Station: Ray Stanford (also picked up and brought trash to the Transfer sorting area), Sharon Pescetta and several others brought the trash they picked up to the Transfer Station and did the sorting too.

A large and enthusiastic group of folks makes for short work and a lot of fun for all.

Shaker 7 Road Race
A Successful Event

Our results are in! We had 142 registered runners with 125 runners posting times at the finish. Although we did not meet our projected revenue from the race, we made some improvements from past races and more than doubled last year's furndraising efforts setting up for an even better race in 2011.

Red Roof Gallery and Frame Shop was opened in 1994 by Bob McQuade in the carriage barn of a 200 year old colonial house on High Street.

In 1996 Bob expanded his space to create a larger frame design area and in 1999 a second frame shop was opened in West Lebanon opening up space for a gallery showcasing original artwork by local and regional artists.

Whether you are framing photographs or other forms of art, Red Roof provides high quality framing you won't find anywhere else in the Upper Valley. If you have something you want to frame but are not quite sure how, Bob will advise you. His service and knowledge are outstanding.

Over the years, I have personally worked with Bob to frame my photographs, my son's preschool artwork, old family photos, old acquired paintings, kitchen tools and more. All are beautifully framed thanks to Bob and his advice. I also framed numerous items while working at Hypertherm for tradeshows and in-house visual displays. I think his work is of the highest quality. To me, his framing makes my amatuer work pieces of art!

Bob's gallery is also outstanding. His local and regional pieces are exceptional. A real treasure in our small town. Everyone needs at least one original piece so what is holding you back? Right on our front doorstep, we have the opportunity to purchase and collect art.

Red Roof currently has work in the gallery by the following artist:

 Pastels - Barbara Bellows
Watercolors and oils - Walker Boyle
Watercolors - Isobel Cochran
Pastels - Mary Jane Morse
Watercolors - Charles McCaughtry
Nature Photography - R.A. McQuade
Photographs - Jon Olsen
Oils and pastels - Shaunna Duffy Smith

The gallery and frame shop are open Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm or by appointment. Look for his "OPEN" flags hanging on Route 4 and on High Street.

Stop in and see what Bob can offer you. You'll be glad you did.

This September marks the 26th year of operation for the Mascoma Cooperative Preschool on Main Street.

The preschool had an exciting 2008/2009 and is gearing up for their 2009/2010 school year.

There is always a lot going on at the preschool. This past year, the children participated in field trips around Enfield. They learned about the jobs that people do in the community by visiting the police station, the bank and the post office.

Last November, they held a food drive where each child brought in a donation every school day. Once collected, they personally delivered three wagons of non-perishable food items to the Enfield Food Pantry. In December, they made ornaments they sent to the military troops overseas for holiday decorating. This past spring, they learned about maple trees and how to make maple syrup. And, just in time for summer, they spent time learning about pond and ocean life.

Classes open in September and there are still a few spots left in each class. For information on programs or to register please call 632-5655 or
