Dear EVA Supporters,
Over the course of
the past month I
have been reminded
of how much EVA
relies on everyone
in Enfield to meet
our mission. While
preparing for the
annual clean up,
working on our first
E250th
beautification
project,
coordinating the
installation of
several new plaques
on the lamp posts on
Main Street and
working on the
Shaker 7 Road
Race, I have come in
contact with so many
people who are
genuinely devoted to
making our town a
better place that I
wanted to
recognize them in
our volunteer
section at the
bottom of this
newsletter.
I hope you will join
me in thanking each
one of these
volunteers as they
work with me to
"keep the good
things happening..."
on Main Street and
around town. It
would be a lonely
job without
everyone's support
and hard work.
Please be sure to
thank these folks
personally next time
you see them.
I especialy want to
thank the Enfield
Town Office and the
Department of Public
Works for their
ongoing support of
EVA. It is a real
privilege to be part
of a team devoted to
making Enfield a
better place to
live.
June will be a busy
month with our main
focus on our annual
Shaker 7 Road Race
and when that's
over, we will focus
on other improvement
projects on Main
Street, other forms
of fund raising and
economic
development.
I hope to see you
all at the Shaker 7
Road Race on June
27th. If you are not
running, there are
plenty of
opportunities to
volunteer or be one
of our many specatactors
cheering on many
town residents who
run.
Sincerely,
Dolores C. Struckhoff

A Successful Green Up Day
In town and at Crystal Lake
The weather held up and between
downtown and Crystal Lake, we had
over 50 volunteers picking up debris
(trash and recycleables). The
downtown crew got into some unique
areas this spring including the
river bank below the Copeland Block,
between two of the buildings on Main
Street and down the river bank on
Oak Grove Street. Thanks go out to
Jason Bosse, Ericka Faughnan and Kim
Quirk for working together on the
river banks on Upper Main Street and
Jason and Ericka in between two
buildings on Main Street. Check out
the photo of one of the bags of cans
Cynthia Walthour picked up on Oak
Grove Street alone. And a special
thank you to my sister, Dianne
Nelson, who came out, manned the
reception area and helped me rake
the grass along the street by the
Copeland Block and in front of the
Enfield Energy Emporium and Erigo.

If I
could make one request of our
residents and visitors, it would be
for everyone to follow the hikers
mantra to "cache in, trash out.!
Basically, if you have trash to
dispose of when outside your home,
don't use the ground, take it home
and dispose of it properly,
recycling when possible. Please
everyone, lets remind each other to
follow this simple rule and we will
have cleaner streets and roads to
travel on. Further, our town
employees work hard to keep our
streets and roads well maintained;
lets support their efforts by
disposing of our trash properly.

It was
a very productive day for
everyone, but our work is never
done. As I walked Main
Street this week to photograph
the flag pole, I was amazed
that litter is reappearing. Help
me get the word out to "cache
in, trash out" by forwarding
this newsletter along to your
friends and family.

the Crystal Lake Green Up.
Downtown Plantings
Barrels, hanging pots and mulch
Have you ever driven through
Main Street and wondered who
puts out all the flowers and who
maintains them. It is a
collaborate effort taken on by
the EVA Design Committe, The
Enfield Community Gardeners and
the Town's Department of Public
Works.
EVA Design Committee
The EVA Design Committee is
devoted to enhancing the
physical area of Enfield's Main
Street, making it an attractive
place for residents, shoppers,
investors, business owners, and
visitors. Current Design
Committee projects include the
installation of seasonal
decorations and plantings along
Main Street, work on public
improvements (streets,
sidewalks, parks) with town and
state officials, and various
programs to encourage more
attractive building exteriors.

The Enfield Community Gardeners
The Enfield Community
Gardeners can be seen
tending to the town flower
beds from spring until fall.
The small group of
volunteers tend to flower
beds at Huse Park, the
Police Station and the Route
4A Recreation Fields as well
as barrels found throughout
the downtown and window
boxes at the Library. The
group has no formal meeting
structure but does socialize
with annual pot lucks and an
occasional field trip to
nearby gardens. More helping
hands are always welcome!
Anyone interested in joining
the Enfield Community
Gardeners should contact
Nancy Smith at 632-4519.

Enfield's Department of
Public Works
The Enfield Public Works
Department consists of these
divisions: Highway
Department, Water & Sewer
Department, Buildings &
Grounds and Sanitation
(solid waste and recycling).
These departments each
supply a distinct service to
the residents of the town
and combine forces when the
work requires. So far this
spring they have worked with
EVA on the Green Up, laid
mulch, watered plants and
hung lamp post plaques.
The Shaker 7 Road Race
Counting down
to June 27th
To date we have over
75 pre-registered runners.
We are well ahead of last
year's numbers to meet our
goal of 200 runners this
year. We also have all of
our volunteers lined up.
Registration begins at
7:30 am, race begins
at 9 am at the Enfield
Shaker Museum, 447 North
Route 4A. Following the
race, a brunch will be
sold to benefit The
Enfield Shaker Museum.

Main
Street Flag Pole Rejuvinated
The EVA
Task Force completes it's first project
towards beautifying Main Street for
Enfield 250th Anniversary in 2011.
Shortly after I arrived at EVA
last August, Lee
Carrier convened the EVA Main
Street Task Force and we began
to idenitfy improvement
opportunities on Main Street
that EVA could support. Early on
we decided to try and complete
some of the improvements in time
for Enfield's upcoming 250th
Anniversary the summer of 2011.
With the support of property
owners
Rick and Leslie Barrow
and
Richard Holmquist
we began by upgrading the Main
Street Flag Pole. Last fall we
hired
Matt Dow of MTD's Property
Mainteance & Contractors of
Canaan to remove the cement
circle around the flag pole and
replace it with Granite from
Enfield Granite.
Just before our annual Hometown
Holiday last December, Matt and
his crew finished the exterior
portion. Bark mulch was put down
with plans to landscape in the
spring.
Before the Memorial Day Parade,
we hired
Michael Burns's MB Pro Landscape
Design LLC of
Enfield to design and install
the landscaping. Although the
hot weather posed a bit of a
problem with the new sod, the
project was finished by Memorial
Day. The flowers are just
beginning to bloom and will
throughout the summer. In
addition, Matt Down returned to
paint the pole with the help of
Fox Tree Service.
Enfield's Main Street Flag Pole
2010
I am told the Flag Pole was
originally installed by the B &
M Railroad as a WWI Veterans
Memorial. If anyone has any
history on this, I would love to
hear it.
Trout replenishment
On
recent morning I
was working in
my office with
the windows open
when I heard a
loud truck on
the bridge. I
looked out the
window and I
thought it was a
truck loaded
with cement
septic tanks
until I saw a
person scooping
fish out of the
tanks, handing
it to another
person who threw
a net full of
large fish over
the bridge and
into the river.
I grabbed my
camera and ran
outside to take
this photograph.
Conservation Officer, Tom
Dakai and Fish Culturist,
John Kennedy from the New
Hampshire Fish and Game
kindly posed for these
photos as they threw in two
or three more scoops of
healthy looking rainbow
trout.
NH Fish & Game

in the Mascoma River Watershed
Over the
past few weeks I have been amazed at
some of the happenings on Main Street
that impact our quality of life. Stop
down sometime, hang out on one of the
benches or bring your lunch and sit next
to the river and the rail trail and be
amazed yourself. One doesn't need to
venture too far from home to appreciate
some natural beauty.
It was
nice to meet the Mericle Family this
past week. After a hard days work at
Dunkin Donuts at Walmart, Kleen
Laundry and Shaw's, the family sat
outside on Blacksmith Alley having a
summer picnic supper while enjoying
their neighbor, Carol Cole's
company. Mr. Mericle has spent time
sprucing up their patio area for the
family to enjoy.
