Keep the good things happening...
Volume I, Issue 1
April 2010

Dear EVA Supporters,

Spring is upon us and by the time you receive this newsletter, April will be almost over. It is the time to say good bye to Winter and the time to greet the spring. Traditionally it has been the time to "spring clean" and that's exactly what EVA will be doing on May 22nd.

The Design Committee is hard at work planning this imporant event. They will be working on the hanging plants on the light posts and with the Garden Club will be planting the half barrels along Main Street. They will also be working on cleaning up a small garden area behind the Laundry Depot that sits in the corner of the Municipal Parking area. Finally, and most importantly, they will be spearheading the clean up of debris along Main and surrounding downtown streets.

The Crystal Lake Association will be hard at work all around the lake roads, too, taking pride in their community. To the Crystal Lake Association it is one of the first times many of the lake residents get together.

I encourage all of you to get your neighbors out on your streets to participate. Stop by Main Street to pick up free trash bags and enjoy some refreshments. We will be recycling by providing participants with two bags; one for trash and one for recycleables. The transfer station is open late into the afternoon and is expecting lots of visitors. If you cannot deliver to the transfer station, bring your bags downtown by 1pm and our volunteers wll do the delivery and sorting for you.

Please join us on May 22nd whether on Main Street or on your own street and help "keep the good things happening" in our Community.

National Historical Register District for Enfield
By Meredith Smith

On April 19, 2010, Enfield's application to create a National Historic Register District in the Village of Enfield was approved by the US Department of Interior. An historic district designation, in conjunction with Enfield's important Shaker heritage and in concert with all of the improvements being promoted by the Enfield Village Association, will encourage historic tourism, which will, in turn, benefit businesses. Raising public consciousness about Enfield's history will also enhance future grant funding opportunities for both the town and EVA. Enfield residents can be extremely proud that their town has been awarded this very special honor.

What a wonderful way to start our 250th Anniversary Year in 2011.

By Paula Rowe

Detective Roy Holland in uniform in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Roy left Enfield in December 2009 and is expected to return home in late November or early December 2010. Roy and his platoon are responsible for protecting a school in the mountains of Afghanistan for grades K through 8. The school serves about 100 children.

Shortly after arriving, Roy informed his friends and colleagues at the Enfield Police Department that the school was in a very poor, mountainous and remote area and the children were in need of common, every day school supplies. After hearing this, the Enfield Police Department, along with the Mascoma Lions Club and many other Enfield residents, sent over care packages. The goods and packaging were provided by Jon and Madeline Cattabriga, John MacVicar, and Bob and Effie Bachand. Most packages contained pencils, crayons, scissors, and paper.

Anyone wishing to send a note to Roy and/or a package for the school may send it to:

Essential Maintenance by Jim
Enfield, NH 03748

Handy Man and Home Projects!

Essential Maintenance by Jim was established in July of 2008 by Jim Shibles. Jim describes his business as a full-service home repair and remodeling company offering quality and experience to help you create comfortable and beautiful surroundings. Whether upgrading for comfort, resale, expansion, or simply to repair a nagging defect, Jim is an experienced all-around handy man who is fully insured.

Jim has experience in both interior and exterior painting. He has renovated basements into lovely living spaces; he has upgraded bathrooms, ceilings, patched drywall, copied and matched old period design and more. One of his happy customers, Bev Sletten of Enfield, says this about Jim's work:

"Thank you again for the wonderful job you did installing the bathroom floor and  the new hearth for the gas stove. I truly appreciate the fact that you are very dependable and the quality of your work is always excellent."

Jim and his wife Betsey Child, have established their home and their businesses in Enfield. They are both regular supporters and volunteers with EVA. Jim believes that EVA is a benefit to his marketing and says that "Thanks to my association with EVA, I have received some clients that I might not have otherwise."

Jim's business started from a desire to be in business for himself. Fresh out of college, he worked for a few construction firms while seeking other careers and in 1984 he bought a fixer-upper house and spent the next twenty years improving his trade with hands-on experience. He says,"I had no sooner clicked on my carpenter's apron in July of 2008, and I was asked to do several small jobs. I have been busy ever since."

This past winter and spring have a been a little slow, probably due to the economy, but right now, he has several outdoor jobs that should last into the fall. He is always trying to schedule indoor jobs for rainy days so give him a call.
