E-NEWS

Keep the good things happening...

Volume I, Issue 1

September 2009

At Enfield Village Association we understand the importance of providing up-to-date communications about our Community to all our loyal EVA supporters.

With that in mind, I will be following in Sharon Carr's footsteps to provide you the EVA E-News on a regular basis. I have enhanced the look and the content of the newsletter and I hope you like it.

I will also be asking everyone for input on content. I am particularly interested in news from organizations and news from businesses in town with any specials you might be running for your local customers. This will ensure we do the most we can to encourage people to buy locally.

To provide news, feel free to stop by the office or call me. I can be reached at the EVA Office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 632-7197. EVA's email is eva@interdial.net.

I am looking forward to working closely with all of you. Feel free to forward this e-newsletter to friends and neighbors and have them click on "Join our Mailing List" to receive EVA E-News directly.

Sincerely,

New Executive Director

By Don Gamache, VP and Director EVA

The Enfield Village Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Dolores Struckhoff as our new Executive Director. Dolores will succeed Sharon Carr who recently retired.

Dolores started on August 17th. She is a life-long resident of Enfield. She served on EVA's Board in its early formative years, and has always been a valuable member and contributor. When her international business activities prevented her from attending some of our Board Meetings, she resigned and EVA was very sorry to lose her. For many years she has lead the project for the downtown spring cleanup.

Both the Search Committee and the Board feel that Dolores meets or exceeds all our criteria and that she will have a very short learning curve because she already knows the Town, many of its residents, and key personnel. Also, she has served on the Board of the Shaker Museum and is involved in volunteering with the museum with which we are collaborating increasingly closely on events.

Her knowledge base, connections, creativity and penchant for hard work lead us to believe she will "hit the ground running."

Design Committee Grant Work

The awnings at 64 Main Street  were partially funded by a grant from EVA. Deb Truman says they are so nice Erigo hates to put them down for fear of getting them dirty!

Downtown Information Kiosk

The Downtown Information Kiosk has received a little face lift. A header has been posted in each window to help people locate information more quickly. The headers are: The Enfield Village Association, The Town of Enfield, Recreation, and Miscellaneous. If you have something pertinent to post, give us a call.

We will be working with The Town Offices and local organizations to make sure we have as much information posted as possible. We will also be adding "information" decals to two of the side posts to attract people passing by.

Heritage Committee

Meredith Smith of the Enfield Heritage Commission informs us that great progress has been made with Enfield's National Register application to create a National Historic Register District in Enfield Village. She said the Commission will be sending the final portfolio of photographs to the historic researcher for completion of the application process. She also stated that The Commission has been told by the historic researcher that Enfield's application will go before the next National Register Review Board in January, 2010 and that soon after that, Enfield Village can expect its nomination approval as a National Historic Register District.  Stay tuned for the official announcement in January.

Cemetery Fountain

Oak Grove Fountain

Take a stroll through Oak Grove to see the restored and upgraded fountain. With the help of Kim Quirk at the "Enfield Energy Emportium" a solar photovoltaics was added to provide the power for the water. Many thanks to the Oak Grove Cemetery Association for making this happen.

 Downtown Volunteers
 Awnings at 64 Main

The Design Committee would like to thank Jose Roberto Barez, a local painter and resident of Main Street who volunteered to help Linda Zoller-McKibbin, when she was replacing the "Welcome" banners on Main Street in August. Linda could not have completed the project without Roberto's help.

Check out Roberto's house painting skills. He just finished painting the trim on the yellow house on the corner of Main and High Street. This project was supported by another partial grant from EVA.

For your future painting projects, Roberto may be reached at 603-359-4810.

George's AG

66 Main Street

603-632-7443

Georges AG (Associated Grocers) has served Enfield for 52 years as a full service grocery store offering dry goods, produce, meats, frozen foods and gas.

George Loupis bought and opened his first store on Main Street in Enfield next to the Copeland Block in 1957. During the early years there were several successful businesses on Main Street like a drugstore, hardware store, doctor's office, bank etc.. The working mill in town helped residents remain local and supportive of the town thereby keeping business successful.

Sometime in the early 1960's Georges store caught on fire. The damage was severe, causing the insurance company and many residents to claim he would not re-open for six months. As his only source of income and support for his family, he began the cleaning up, hoping to re-open in a couple of weeks. The next morning he was surprised to see Dr. Henry Brown come to his store, grab a bucket and start cleaning the fire damaged cases. Several other Enfield residents showed up that day and over the next week to volunteer and help George re-open. Georges AG re-opened in 10 days.

In 1965 George bought land from Don Crate with the intention of building a new store. The building was completed in 1965 and opened in January of 1966.

George retired in 1993. He left the business to three of his sons - Greg, Kent and John, and continues to lease the property to them today.
